“For more than 75 years, May has been designated as Better Hearing and Speech Month,” said Dr. Scott, from Midwest ENT.

Better Hearing and Speech Month“This monthlong campaign is an important one as it creates the opportunity to help normalize hearing loss and hearing protection. Hearing health is a big part of your overall health, which is not yet common knowledge.”

Hearing Health and Your Total-Body Health

According to the National Council on Aging, untreated hearing loss has been linked to increased susceptibility to numerous other health complications.

“Our bodies require clean fuel and nutrients to run properly,” continued Dr. Scott, who has been serving the hearing healthcare needs of the Sioux Falls community for many years. “Knowing your body’s relationship with hearing can help you stay mindful of your overall well-being and help create a path for healthier living. Our goal is to discover the nature of a person’s hearing difficulty and create personalized solutions for them.”

How Hearing Technology Can Help Those With Hearing Difficulties

According to a study conducted by Michigan State University, an estimated 28 million people in the United States experience some type of treatable hearing loss, yet less than a quarter of those people use hearing device technology to enhance their hearing.

We recommend people get their hearing checked on an annual basis to ensure they’re always hearing their best. We get regular eye and dental exams — why should our hearing be treated any differently?

You or a loved one should get your hearing evaluated if you are experiencing:

  • Muffled speech sounds
  • Difficulty hearing on the telephone
  • Difficulty hearing people speak in a crowd
  • Trouble understanding the voices of women or children
  • Friends or loved ones complaining you turn the volume of your TV or radio too loud

By raising awareness, reducing the stigmas attached to hearing difficulties, and supporting one another in our efforts toward achieving better hearing, we can ensure that Better Hearing and Speech Month will lead to a lifetime of better hearing for everyone.

Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat Hearing Center has helped thousands of patients with their hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders—and offers state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and expert fitting of hearing technology.
